Functionally, yoga blocks bring the ground ‘up’, closer to your hands, offering ease and support in poses where your hands cannot yet reach the ground with good posture. For example, in Triangle Pose, if you can’t reach your toes, a block helps you protect your lower back and maintain stability. Blocks help you stretch deeper in poses while avoiding excessive strain or loss of balance.
The terms yoga bricks and yoga blocks are synonyms for the same yoga prop. The distinction is found in the SIZE of the prop. Most commonly, a yoga”brick” is slimmer at 3″ in width and a yoga “block” is thicker at 4″ in width. Your sense of comfort and stability will usually feel better on one vs. the other.
Most yoga blocks are 9 by 6 by 4 inches in size. Foam blocks are usually lighter and have more “give” than cork ones. Sturdy foam blocks are better for comfort, balancing, standing, and restorative poses. Cork blocks are heavier and harder.
You can perform many poses without blocks. Some poses can be done with one block, while some may need two. It’s recommended that you get two yoga blocks, so you’ll be prepared for any new poses.
Yoga blocks definitely make yoga easier because they help you feel more supported in various poses by having something firm to lean on or press against. Blocks help both beginners and advanced yogis, but in different ways that are tailored to the level of the user.
The two biggest factors to consider when purchasing yoga blocks are size, material, and shape. SIZE: The most common size yoga block is 9″x 6″x 4.” Their greater width makes them more stable than 3″ blocks. MATERIAL: Foam is by far the most common material, making up 90% of all yoga blocks sold. SHAPE: Blocks with a hand-shaped design boost comfort, balance, and stability. They are essential for relieving wrist and hand compression in poses like Planks, Down Dog, Cobra, and Triangle poses.
Yoga blocks are great for anyone and everyone who practices yoga. They can be especially useful to people with physical limitations or injuries. Blocks with hand-shaped designs often allow people with current wrist pain or previous wrist injury to resume their practice without pain. Using blocks is not a sign of being “bad” at yoga. Blocks are useful for balancing, sitting, standing, stretching, and restorative yoga poses.
Yes, yoga blocks help you perform yoga with better overall posture. More specifically, ergonomic yoga blocks put your wrists and hands in better posture, especially useful in poses that place body weight on the wrists. Flat-sided blocks put the wrists at 90 degrees. The best ergonomic blocks place body weight on the wrists while they are only bent 45 degrees, which is much stronger for weight-bearing and protects the wrists.
